Work in Public
Edited by Rachel Alliston
Published by Press LMP, Berlin, 2015
Work in Public is the first volume in what is prepared to be a series of books concerned with cultural production in public space, with an emphasis on visual cultures. All to be published by Press LMP, subsequent books in the series will likewise be published as collections of essays. Also similar to this first issuance, a wide variety of authors will continue to be approached in the hopes of generating a fruitfully diverse dialogue around the production of visual culture in public space, and the potential ramifications of image to what is hoped will be more socially just futures.
My contribution, titled “Our Beating Hearts: An Encounter with Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Pulse Park,” considers Lozano-Hemmer’s exhibition Pulse Park, which consisted of a heartbeat sensor sculpture and two hundred spotlights installed in an oval shape in the middle of Madison Square Park (on view nightly from October 24, 2008 to January 1, 2009, from dusk until 10:00 p.m.).
