Elmgreen & Dragset: The Others
Edited by Anita Iannacchione and Rachel Alliston

Published by König Galerie, Berlin, and Koenig Books, London, 2017

The book The Others accompanies the exhibition of the same name at König Galerie in Berlin, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset and on view from November 12, 2016 to January 22, 2017. Inspired by the gallery’s location at St. Agnes, formerly a Catholic church, the exhibition presents fifteen works by twelve artists who have each challenged established ways of portraying the body within Christian iconography. Focusing on the meaning of materiality in Christianity and contemporary art, the show brings together a variety of figurative representations to address issues of belief, gender, race, morality, and sexuality. With works by Tacita Dean, Elmgreen & Dragset, Pepe Espaliú, Martin Kippenberger, Kris Martin, Ron Mueck, Aidan Salakhova, Andres Serrano, Santiago Sierra, Young-Jun Tak, Nasan Tur, and Mark Wallinger.

Copublished by Koenig Books and König Galerie in English and German, the book includes an introduction by the exhibition’s curators, Elmgreen & Dragset, as well as an essay by art historian Michael Diers. Descriptions of the exhibited artworks, installation views, and documentation of the St. Agnes building during its former life as a church are presented along with quotes by figures whose thinking relates to the exhibition’s theme, and reference images of works that informed the curatorial process.
